Minister Gram: The deadline has passed, but it is still possible to apply for housing benefits

Those who did not apply for housing benefits in December can still apply even though the deadline has passed. The housing benefits have been extended to help more people with their electricity bills.

“It was quite a short time from the change of the rules before Christmas to the application deadline for housing benefits for December, which expired at New Year. Therefore, there is good reason to accept applications afterward,” Minister of Local Government and Districts Bjørn Bjørn Arild Gram (SP) said on Wednesday.

The housing benefits have been temporarily extended in December, January, and February. It is estimated that about 50,000 more people can receive housing benefits with the expansion.

The support for December was paid out on January 19, and it also triggered an extra payment of at least NOK 1,500. Gram believes far more people may be entitled to housing benefits during this period compared to the number of those who already applied.

In January, there were around 12,000 more applications than in December.

“I want as many people as possible – of those who are entitled to housing benefits during this period – to actually receive it. Therefore, I have asked the Norwegian State Housing Bank (Husbanken) to accept applications after the deadline. They will do so until April 1, 2022,” Gram said.
