New record: Norwegians spent 58 billion kroner on online shopping in the second quarter of 2021

In the second quarter of 2021, Norwegians spent almost NOK 60 billion on online shopping. That is a new record – it’s 41% more than in the same period last year.

In total, Norwegians spent NOK 96.2 billion on card transactions in the second quarter. That was an increase of 26% from the second quarter of 2020, according to Statistics Norway’s (SSB) statistics based on the use of international payment cards. For card use outside the internet, the increase was 9%.

A total of 59% of the turnover with payment cards online, NOK 33.9 billion, took place on Norwegian websites – an increase of 1% from the same period last year, when NOK 24 billion was spent.

NOK 26.2 billion was spent on purchases of goods – 35% more than in the same period last year, and almost a doubling from the level before the lockdown in the first quarter of 2020.

In the second quarter of this year, purchases of digital equipment and groceries accounted for the largest share of expenditure, with NOK 4.5 and 3.9 billion, respectively.
