Pirates have kidnapped nine sailors from the Bonita cargo ship off the West African country of Benin. The ship belongs to the Norwegian shipping company J.J. Ugland.

To Dagens Næringsliv, Communications Director Christine Korme of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association states that all the kidnapped are Filipino citizens.

– We have close dialogue with the shipping company and refer to their website, Korme tells NTB.

On its website, the company reports that the ship was boarded by pirates early Saturday morning while it was at anchor.

Contact with authorities
The company is in contact with relevant authorities, it says, and it will keep the families until the crew is informed.

– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of the incident. No Norwegian citizens are involved. The matter is handled by the shipping company, says communication advisor Guri Solberg in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to NTB.
