Norway gave 40.1 billion kroner in aid last year – Syria was the largest recipient
Last year, Norway provided a total of NOK 40.1 billion in aid, and Syria was, for the sixth year in a row, the country that received the most Norwegian aid.
The amount of NOK 40.1 billion is also the highest in absolute numbers ever, and an increase of NOK 600 million from 2020.
Norad managed the largest share of development aid, 50% (NOK 20 billion), while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo managed 32% (NOK 13 billion) in 2021. The rest of the development aid funds are managed by the embassies in developing countries and the Ministry of Climate and the Environment.
The vaccine alliance GAVI, the World Food Program, and the Norwegian Refugee Council were among the major recipients of Norwegian development assistance money.
Norwegian health assistance to developing countries was at a record high in 2021, mainly due to the corona pandemic. In total, Norway provided NOK 7.9 billion for health assistance in 2021.
