Norway registered strong growth in overnight stays in June of 2021, compared with June last year.

Figures from the accommodation statistics show that there were about 2.8 million overnight stays at commercial accommodation establishments in June this year. That is an increase of 18% compared to June last year.

Foreign overnight stays

June this year was still characterized by few foreign overnight stays, despite some relief in travel restrictions. Overall, overnight stays for June this year, measured against June 2019, showed a decrease of 35%.

Foreign overnight stays fell by as much as 91%, while Norwegian overnight stays fell by only 3.4% compared with the record year of 2019.

Campsites

For the second time since Statistics Norway (SSB) started registering overnight stays at campsites in 1968, there were more than one million Norwegian overnight stays in June.

Many Norwegians also used campsites last year, but this year there were over 100,000 more overnight stays. Innlandet, Agder, and Nordland all had a significant increase in overnight stays and contributed most to the increase.

A decline was registered in Rogaland, Vestland, Møre og Romsdal, and Trøndelag.

Hotels

There were about 1.2 million overnight stays at Norwegian hotels in June, an increase of around 19% from June last year.

Compared with June last year, there was an increase in all counties. Innlandet, Oslo, and Nordland stood out in particular, with the largest increase in the number of overnight stays.
