Norway’s Center Party: It’s mad to spend 36 billion kroner on new government quarter

Center Party (SP) leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum thinks it is insane to spend NOK 36 billion on a new government building. Both the Socialist Left (SV) and the Progress Party (FRP) support him.

“It’s crazy to spend NOK 36 billion on new office space in the center of Oslo when we see the enormous needs we have throughout the country. It’s a waste of public money,” Slagsvold Vedum told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

Both the SP and the SV want the government to leave the offices in the buildings that are currently in use.

Former Minister of Oil and Energy and current Member of Parliament for the FRP Kjell-Børge Freiberg is also critical of the use of money.

Slagsvold Vedum will address the issue in the Norwegian parliament (Storting).

“Now the government has to say enough. We have to lower the costs. Nikolai Astrup and Erna Solberg cannot defend this kind of spending,” he noted.

It was newspaper Aftenposten who first mentioned the price of NOK 36 billion, but Industry Minister Nikolai Astrup (H) doesn’t agree that the works will be that expensive.
