Norway’s hairdressing industry is collapsing due to new corona measures

After the Norwegian government tightened corona measures this week, cancellations began pouring in to hairdressers all over the country, according to NHO Service og Handel.

The hairdressing and wellness industry, which consists of about 8,000 companies with more than 22,000 employees, is now probably facing bankruptcy, NHO warned.

“The government’s announced (support) measures are not enough. We must get back the broad compensation scheme we had this spring, and the scheme must last as long as the crisis lasts,” Anne-Cecilie Kaltenborn at NHO Service og Handel noted.

Like many other businesses, the country’s hair salons were closed on March 12 before being reopened on April 27.

“Situation is worse now”

The authorities have now asked Norwegians to stay at home as much as possible in the future.

They also called on Norwegians to limit social and physical contact as much as possible.

“In March, several hairdressing companies had some money on the books. But those kroner have been used up.

“The situation now is, therefore, worse than last spring when we were shut down,” Anne-Mari Halsan, leader of the employer organization Norwegian hairdressing and wellness companies, warned.
