In order for more companies to be able to use the wage support scheme, the Norwegian government is now proposing a more flexible calculation of turnover decrease.

The proposal means that companies can choose whether they want to start from two years ago or in October and November 2021 when they calculate their turnover drop as a basis for applying for wage support, the government wrote in a press release.

“We have been concerned with making it a little less difficult for companies and employees in the coming months. We have listened to the parties and input we have received in recent days. Therefore, the government will now propose that companies themselves can choose which of the two calculation methods is best suited (for them). The reduction for those who choose October and November will be removed as a result of everyone now being able to use the model,” Minister of Finance Trygve Slagsvold Vedum (SP) said.

Presented wage support scheme on Friday

The government presented a proposal for a wage support scheme on Friday. The proposal opened up the possibility for companies that have a turnover shortfall of at least 20% in December and January to apply for wage support for their employees. Companies can choose whether they want to take their turnover in the same month two years earlier or October and November 2021 as their starting point when calculating their fall in turnover.

Companies that did not exist can use the average turnover in October and November 2021 in full as a starting point for the calculation with the adjusted proposal.

The government’s wage support scheme has received criticism from the business community. Minister Vedum has said that the ESA has informed the government that it could not provide more wage support due to the EU’s competition rules.

On Sunday, the ESA rejected the claim from Vedum that the government cannot provide more wage support due to the EU’s competition rules.
