Norwegians had a total consumer debt of NOK 150.1 billion in December of 2021. That is a decrease of 6.8% from December in 2020.

The decrease from 2020 to 2021 amounted to NOK 10.9 billion, figures from the Debt Register show.

“With a view to preventing debt problems, it is positive that the trend of a decline in consumer debt continued through 2021,” general manager Egil Årrestad in the Debt Register noted in a press release.

Total consumer debt increased in November but then declined again in December. The Debt Register believes the development is related to the authorities introducing new measures to limit the spread of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.
