New consumption figures show that retail trade fell by as much as 5.7% from November to December last year.

The fall in retail trade in the Christmas month comes after an increase of 2.9% from October to November, Statistics Norway (SSB) writes.

The corona pandemic has affected Norwegians’ shopping habits, and last year, there was a shift in consumption from services to goods. The fall in cross-border trade and Norwegians’ reduced travel also affect the figures.

The decline in sales of electronics in stores contributed most to the decline.

The fact that Norwegians did their Christmas shopping in November to a greater extent also explains the fall in retail trade during the Christmas month.

Large variations

Virke points out that 350,000 people work in the retail trade in Norway and that there are large variations between the various industries for how the corona period has affected people’s shopping patterns.

“Norwegians have spent much of 2020 at home. They’ve bought extra food and drinks to enjoy at home, and building materials to make it more pleasant.

“At the same time, we have been less social, which has given us less need to look good in new clothes and shoes,” director Harald Jachwitz Andersen in Virke Handel notes.
