If they do not take care of the formalities, Norwegians who choose to have a home office abroad risk paying double tax.

According to Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK), the Tax Administration is experiencing an increase in questions about the tax rules for home offices in both Norway and abroad.

Tax lawyer Oddgeir Wiik at Deloitte says that it is not just a matter of simply leaving the country with a computer.

“This must be planned, and things must be done in the right order. Otherwise, it can have major financial consequences for both the employee and the employer. It is always expensive to fix things afterward,” he said.

Those who work for a Norwegian company abroad risk paying tax to two countries if they have not applied to the Norwegian authorities. In countries with which Norway has a tax agreement, the tax will eventually be adjusted. Still, according to the tax lawyer, this can take a long time.
