Number of unemployed Norwegians decreased by 3,000 from November to December

A total of 193,300 completely unemployed, partially unemployed, and job seekers are registered at the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) in December. That is 3,000 fewer than in November.

Furthermore, 106,900 people are registered as completely unemployed at the end of December, which constitutes 3.8% of the labor force.

Out of the 106,900, a total of 29,500 are laid off, the NAV stated in a press release.

Gross unemployment – the sum of the completely unemployed and jobseekers on measures – amounts to 122,000 people or 4.3% of the labor force. 

A further 71,300 people were registered as partially unemployed, and 31,500 out of these are registered as partially unemployed.

The laid-off make up 2.2% of the labor force, a slight decline since November.

There is a decrease in the number of completely unemployed in all counties in the country. 

Unemployment is highest in Oslo, at 5.7%. Unemployment is lowest in Nordland and Trøndelag, with 2.6% in both counties.

Finding new jobs

The decline in unemployment in December means that the increase in November has been partially reversed.

“The decline this month occurred most prominently among the unemployed who were not laid off. This may indicate that employers who have laid off employees have not had the opportunity to take them back this month, but that ordinary unemployed people still find jobs,” NAV chief Hans Christian Holte noted.

Overview

The number of jobseekers was at a record high after the shutdown in March, and the peak was reached in mid-April. 

There are now 239,300 fewer job seekers registered at the NAV than in April, which means that the number has halved.

But compared to the unemployment figures for December of last year, there is still an increase of 91,600.

At the end of December, the share of completely unemployed workers in the labor force was highest in the tourism and transport sectors, at 11.2%.
