Norwegians have never used as much electricity as in 2018. This shows new figures from Statistics Norway. At the same time, total power generation went down.
The total electricity consumption in Norway increased by 2 per cent from 2017 to 2018, figures from Statistics Norway’s annual electricity statistics show.
In 2018, wind power production increased by 36 percent, but wind power still accounts for only 2.4 percent of total power generation. Hydropower accounts for 95 percent of electricity production in Norway.
Total power generation fell by 1.6 percent from 2017 to 2018, although Norway used 2 percent more electricity.
The increase in electricity consumption is greatest in the crude oil and natural gas extraction groups, “production of non-ferrous metals in the power-intensive industry” and “information and communication”.
In the group “information and communication” consumption increased by 55 percent from 2017 to 2018. Statistics Norway believes that the reason is that several new data centers have been established in Norway in 2018.
The power industry as a whole remained in 2018 with an operating profit of NOK 44 billion.
