While Norwegians cross the Swedish border to buy cheap meat, tobacco, and alcohol, the Swedes cross the border to buy cheap Norwegian diesel.

Although Norwegians complain about high taxes on petrol and diesel, the latter is up to four to five kroner cheaper in Norway than in Sweden, and thus Swedish motorists cross the border to save some money on diesel, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reports.

After the border to the neighboring country reopened, the Norwegian side of the border also noticed increased traffic.

“They occasionally talk about a liter price of over 20 kroner in Sweden. If the price here is at 16-17 kroner, then we notice that we get visits (from Swedish drivers),” gas station owner Jan Petter Bjørnevik in Meråker told NRK.

His station has had a volume increase in diesel sales of 50% compared to the same time last year.

Kenneth Opsahl, the general manager at a gas station near Svinesund, confirms that they have noticed the same trend further south in the country.
