Enova will support three industrial projects with more than NOK 1 billion in hydrogen investment as part of the climate change policy. The companies Yara, Tizir, and Horisont Energi will receive the support, Enova announced on Friday.

“I experience that what we do here today is to deliver on the mandate from the environmental summit in Glasgow. We must translate words into action,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (AP) said.

He pointed out that the key to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and creating jobs lies in industry.

“I believe in a new industrialization of Norway and green business policy, and this is really a follow-up to that,” he said.

Technology development

The support from Enova will contribute to the companies developing zero- and low-emission technology.

* Yara will be supported with up to NOK 283 million for a demonstration project for ammonia and fertilizers. It will be based on renewable energy and hydrogen produced by water electrolysis instead of from natural gas as it is today. The project will be carried out at Yara’s facility on Herøya outside Porsgrunn. This will be an important step for Yara to be able to produce fertilizer without emissions in the future.

* Tizir Titanium and Iron will receive up to NOK 261 million in support of the project at the smelter in Tyssedal. They will carry out a development and demonstration project that will lead to the use of hydrogen instead of coal to reduce ilmenite. The goal of the project is to develop a new technology that allows the company in the future to build a full-scale plant where they replace 85% of coal consumption with hydrogen.

* Through the Barents Blue project, the company Horisont Energi will receive up to NOK 482 million in support of a project to establish ammonia production from natural gas with carbon capture near Hammerfest. The plant will produce 1 million tonnes of ammonia per year. CO2 will be transported to a future Polaris carbon storage for permanent disposal.

Green growth strategy

The road to a zero-emission future requires major climate and industrial policy measures. The government wants Norway to succeed in seizing the opportunities that lie in the green shift, Climate Minister Espen Barth Eide (AP) pointed out.

“To achieve this, green restructuring must be made our foremost growth strategy. Then we are dependent on players who invest in solutions that help cut emissions and create jobs. The three hydrogen projects that receive support today are good examples of just this, and they show in a good way how Enova works as a birth aid to bring new climate-friendly technology into the market,” Eide said.

For all three projects, it is a prerequisite that the support is approved by the European Free Trade Association Surveillance Authority (ESA), before it can finally be distributed by Enova.
