German Volkswagen aims to become the world leader in electric vehicles by 2025.
– By 2025, we plan to sell 1 million electric cars a year, and by that time we also want to be a global leader, said car giants chief Herbert Diess during a presentation on Tuesday.

– Electric cars will be the Volkswagen brand, he added.

Volkswagen has struggled with its reputation after it became known that they had tampered with emission data to make its diesel engines seem far more environmentally friendly than they really are.

Around 11 million cars are driving around with such engines, and Volkswagen have agreed to pay hundreds of billions in fines and penalties to governments and car owners worldwide.

Last week the company said that they will now be betting big on electric vehicle technologies and plan to develop over 30 new electric car models by 2025.

The plan involves an investment of about 32 billion in Germany for the next four years and is expected to create 9,000 new jobs.

VW Group, which also includes Audi, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, MAN and Scania have over 624,000 employees worldwide.
215,000 employees are currently associated with the production of VW cars.
