An avalanche has occurred in the Fjordbukta area north of Alta center in Finnmark. Several cabin residents are feared to be trapped, and there is a danger of more avalanches.

The police in Finnmark reported the avalanche on Twitter on Sunday morning.

“We have been notified that there has been a significant avalanche in the area around Skillefjordbotn outside Alta.

“The challenge is that there are many people who have a cabin there and who could be trapped by the avalanche,” operations manager Stein Hugo Jørgensen told newspaper VG.

The avalanche is unlikely to have hit cabin owners directly, but the exit roads are blocked.

Emergency services notified

“We have notified the crisis management (team) in Alta Municipality, and the other emergency services have been notified.

“Our job is to get in touch with those who are within the avalanche (area), and find a way to get them out,” Jørgensen said.

The police ask people in the avalanche area to report to the police via the telephone number 02800.

Fjordbukta is located in a side branch of the Altafjord, about 20 kilometers north of Alta center. The weather in Finnmark is currently bad, and a number of roads are closed.
