Cold and dry weather expected this weekend – especially in the north of Norway

In Northern Norway, temperatures could drop to as low as -30 degrees this weekend. For Southern Norway, the forecasts are more uncertain.

A high-pressure area from the Barents Sea will ensure that temperatures remain low in Northern Norway.

“High pressure in the north at this time of year means dry and cold weather, and on the Finnmarksvidda the temperature can drop to between 20 and 30 degrees below zero,” state meteorologist Martin Granerød at the Meteorological Institute told NTB.

The weather will be somewhat cloudy, but the meteorologist does not rule out that northerners could get a glimpse of the northern lights during the weekend. Along the coast, temperatures will be somewhat milder, between -5 and -15 degrees. 

No new snow in Central Norway this weekend 

In Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag it will snow a bit until the weekend, after which dry weather is expected on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In the interior, it can be quite cold, for example, in Røros.

Temperatures can vary between 20 and 25 degrees below zero, while along the coast, the temperature will fall to between 5 and 10 degrees below zero.

Uncertain forecasts for Southern Norway

“In Southern Norway, south of Stad and Dovre, the forecasts are more uncertain… but the cold weather will probably continue,” Granerød said.

The uncertainty is related to a low-pressure area from the North Sea that can lead to somewhat lower temperatures and rain, sleet, and snow. This is especially true in Sørlandet and Vestlandet, where outer coastal areas could get a lot of precipitation in the form of rain.

Eastern Norway still cold and dry

For Eastern Norway, the weather will also continue as it has been the last few days, with cold and dry winter weather and temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees below zero.

In other words, the snow that fell at the beginning of the week will remain in place, and the inner areas may also get some fresh snow.
