The government has granted NOK 9 million to kindergartens in five Norwegian cities. The goal is to recruit children to kindergartens in vulnerable areas.

‘’A good kindergarten offer has long-lasting positive effects for further learning at school, especially when it comes to language development and social competence. Therefore, it is important that as many people as possible get the opportunity to go to kindergarten’’ said Minister of Science and Integration, Jan Tore Sanner of Høyre (H).

The money was distributed to Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, and Drammen.

Sanner pointed out that kindergarten participation among minority-language speaking children is low in some areas in the largest cities. The city municipalities already have investments in vulnerable urban areas to improve the environment, housing, and living conditions. Children and adolescents are a particularly important target group, and it is emphasised that it is a clear goal to get more into kindergarten.

‘’The funds for the five municipalities are additional to all the other initiatives that the government has implemented to lower the threshold, and get more people to participate in kindergartens. Since 2015, we have introduced a moderation scheme so that no families have to spend more than 6% of their income on kindergarten. We have also introduced free core time for 3, 4, and 5-year-olds, and from August 1 this year we will extend the scheme to apply for 2-year-olds’’ said Sanner.
