NVE: Watch out for unsafe spring ice while you’re enjoying the Easter sun

Be careful if it’s sunny during Easter because spring ice can be very dangerous.

Several fatal accidents occurred involving ice fishers who moved on ice on lakes, Ånund Kvambekk at the NVE warns.

“When the snow melts, the transformation of the ice crystals begins, and the spring ice formation really picks up speed when the night frost is absent,” the ice warner explains.

Spring ice consists of vertical ice crystals with poor bonding between the crystals. The ice can carry weight after a cold night, but it can suddenly lose its carrying capacity during the morning.

People can fall through spring ice that is even 30 centimeters thick.

“If you fall through, it is very difficult to get up because the ice just breaks again. You have to get help from friends or a helicopter,” Kvambekk said, warning people to check the ice before they go out.

In higher forest areas and in the mountains and in Troms and Finnmark, the ice this year is well covered with snow, and the spring ice formation has not started yet.
