Researcher: The boom in electricity and petrol prices could increase maneuver room for Støre’s government

Electricity prices are at a record high in Southern Norway, and petrol prices are also high. This could strengthen the Støre government’s room for maneuver, a Statistics Norway (SSB) researcher believes.

“These high gas and oil prices can, if they persist, increase the room for maneuver very quickly,” macroeconomist Ådne Cappelen in the SSB told the newspaper Nationen.

Macroeconomist Kyrre Aamdal at DNB agrees that government revenues are increasing. But most people experience weakened purchasing power and poorer personal finances, he warned.

“So if a new government wants people to feel better, it does not help that the public sector has increased purchasing power,” he noted.
