A significant proportion of Swedes will probably be offered a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine next year. Some may receive the offer already in the autumn.
According to the Public Health Authority, people in risk groups – such as residents of nursing homes, people over the age of 80, and people with weakened immune systems – can receive the third dose during the autumn.
“The assessment is that it is not possible to eradicate the virus. Therefore, vaccination work should be long-term and aimed at reducing serious illness and death,” state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell stated on Thursday.
He said it is important to have a special focus on those who live in areas with low vaccination levels.
The Public Health Authority believes that the general vaccination of the population as a whole could be completed during the autumn when 16-17-year-olds and those who have so far chosen not to be vaccinated have been offered a vaccine.
