The European Commission is proposing a halt to all air traffic from southern Africa in connection with the new coronavirus variant that has been discovered in the area.
The European Commission’s leader Ursula von der Leyen announced the news on Friday.
The United Kingdom and several other countries have already stopped all air traffic from countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, and Botswana in connection with variant B. 1.1.529.
South Africa, which is where the variant was first discovered, has already criticized Britain’s flight ban.
The country has experienced a rapid increase in infection in recent days, and it is assumed that the new variant is extra contagious. On Thursday, 2,465 new corona cases were registered in South Africa.
