Three men died in drowning accidents in January. Two of the accidents happened on the ice, according to statistics from the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue (Redningsselskapet).
A man in his 60s drowned after falling through the ice in Bergen, while another man of the same age died when his tractor went through the ice on Tretten. The third drowning accident happened outside Vadsø, where a young man died while diving.
There have also been several incidents where people have fallen through the ice and either saved themselves or received help from others.
The Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue encourages people to prepare before going out on the ice.
“Inform yourself, bring safety equipment, and be with others. Even if you are sure that the ice is safe, we advise everyone to bring safety equipment such as ice spikes, a throwing line, and a mobile phone in a waterproof bag. Then you can both save yourself and save others,” Tanja Krangnes of the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue noted.
