The human rights situation in Egypt is ‘’challenging’’ according to the Foreign Ministry after ex-president Mohamed Mursi died abruptly after nearly six years in prison.

NTB news have asked Foreign Minister, Ine Eriksen Søreide of Høyre (H) to comment on the death on Monday and the way Mursi had been treated, and to give an assessment of the general human rights situation in Egypt.

‘’The human rights situation in Egypt is challenging, and we regularly take it up in our bilateral dialogue with Egyptian authorities. We have also made specific recommendations to Egypt in the UN Human Rights Council during the country consultation. One of these applied to legal certainty and conditions for remand detention’’ said Eriksen Søreide in a statement to NTB news on Thursday morning.

She said Norway will continue to follow developments closely in cooperation with related countries, and will raise human rights issues with Egyptian authorities.
