Virke fears that open borders will lead to fewer jobs for Norwegian workers

Virke fears jobs will move to Sweden as a result of reopened borders. The organization is calling for a lower tax level to keep Norwegian consumers in Norwegian shops.

“There is a lot of money and many jobs, and we fear that they will disappear if everyone goes shopping in Sweden,” says Jarle Hammerstad, head of trade policy in Virke, to TV 2.

In 2019, Norwegians spent about NOK 16 billion on shopping in Swedish. Almost all of this turnover has remained in Norway during the pandemic.

Hammerstad believes that a tax reduction is needed to win the battle for customers.

“We can take several steps to ensure that more of that trade takes place in Norwegian stores. It is about adapting the taxes to what we have in the countries around us. We still have big differences,” Hammerstad said. He expects the new government to get properly involved in the border trade problem.
