Marte Olsbu Røiseland will carry the Norwegian flag during the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics on Sunday. The biathlete has had a fantastic Olympics showing – she won five medals.

“I was both surprised, happy, and proud when the head of top-level sports took me aside… and asked if I would be the flag bearer at the closing ceremony. It is a great honor for me to carry the Norwegian flag in front of the Norwegian squad after an incredible Olympics for Norway,” she noted in a press release.

Røiseland became one of the most decorated athletes in the Winter Games, with golds in sprint, pursuit, and mixed relay, as well as bronze in individual and mass start.

She already has two Olympic silver medals from Pyeongchang.

“A dream”

“The Beijing Games have been (like) a dream for me, and being a flag bearer will be a significant moment in the games for me personally, but also a nice celebration of the good community and the great achievements of the Norwegian squad,” she said.

Top-level sports manager Tore Øvrebø, the leader of the Norwegian squad, is full of admiration for Marte Olsbu Røiseland.

Happy and proud

“Marte is a great representative of Norway and the Norwegian squad, both in terms of sport and personality. She is an example to follow when it comes to her sports-related development and a role model in how to represent Norwegian sports.

“She has had an adventurous Olympics with three golds and two bronzes, and we are happy and proud that she will carry the flag,” he noted in a statement.

Marit Bjørgen was the Norwegian flag bearer during the closing ceremony in Pyeongchang four years ago.
