A dramatic decline in the demand for airline trips because of the corona pandemic has led to an equally dramatic increase in the pricing on airline tickets in the second quarter this year.

Ticket prices increased a combined 33.6% compared to the same period last year. This is according to the product price index for air transport by Statistics Norway (SSB).

Ticket prices for leisure trips increased more than for business trips, and the prices for domestic trips increased more than for international trips.

As a consequence of closed international borders and a reduced domestic airline activity due to the Corona pandemic, total airline traffic was greatly decreased in the second quarter, but increased slightly towards the end of the period, particularly in June.

SSB states that the price development is influenced by the large changes happening within the airline industry and is therefore more uncertain than usual.
