Travel companies in Northern Norway have received the first cancellations from Chinese tourists following the outbreak of the Wuhan virus. This is because those who have bought package tours are now not allowed to leave China because of the coronavirus.

“If the Chinese are not allowed to travel out of the country, it is clear that it will have major consequences for us,” Trine Risvik of Tromsø Outdoor CenterThe Wuhan virus affects the tourism industry in Northern Norway

The company takes tourists out in search of the Northern Lights and has an agreement with a Chinese tour operator. It is precisely companies that engage in Northern Lights safaris and fjord trips that are likely to notice the effects most, writes DN.

“The outbreak of the virus will lead to cancellations is a reality and some players will notice this more than others, but at the national level there are currently no major consequences for Norwegian tourism,” said Bente Bratland Holm, Director of Tourism, Innovation Norway.

Neither Hurtigruten nor the hotel industry in Tromsø and Oslo have reported any major changes due the travel prohibitions.

So far, 169 people have been confirmed dead from the Wuhan virus in China, and over 7,000 people have been confirmed sick.
