Tourists must stay away from the whales

Experiencing whales up close is becoming more difficult. New safety rules for whale watching will spring into action with immediate effect.

It is prohibited for whale watching boats to be closer than approx. 370 meters from fishing vessels or fixed fishing gear. Swimming, diving or paddling closer than approx. 750 meters from fishing vessels and permanent fishing gear will also be prohibited.

The government is doing this to avoid people swimming close to moving boats and exposing themselves and others to risk.

The new rules will take effect immediately. In the past there have also been guidelines for the whale watching industry, but clearer rules are in demand, according to the government.

Whale watching has become a major industry along the Norwegian coast. Between 30 and 40 companies operate whale watching in Norway today.
