King Harald to spend his birthday overseas with close family

The Royal Family has announced that King Harald will be spending his 85th birthday overseas with his close family. King Harald, who has reigned since 1991, will turn 85 on February 21. Over his 3 decades on the throne, he has guided the nation through several national crises such as the July 22, 2011 terror attacks, the 2020 Gjerdrum landslide, and the 2021 Kongsberg attacks. During his reign, he has also seen 7 prime ministers come and go.

His tenure on the throne has coincided with a rise in popularity of the monarchy. This can be attributed to perceptions of a more egalitarian, affable, and unpretentious nature of Norwegian royalty compared to other crowned heads worldwide.

Though he is still active, he has been allowing his son, Crown Prince Haakon, to perform some of his official duties for him. This is the third royal birthday this year after his granddaughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, turned 18 last month and his older sister, Princess Astrid, Mrs. Ferner, turned 90 earlier this month.
