There has been a sharp increase in the number of illnesses in people infected with the tick virus, according to NRK.
Never before have so many people become ill after getting a tick virus as this year. The virus can cause severe infection of the central nervous system and cannot be treated. On the other hand, there is a vaccine against the virus, reports the state channel.
The Telemark hospital alone has registered twelve cases this year, compared to nine last year. Previously, the number of cases of illness has been between zero and three. The tick virus has only been detected along the coast of Telemark, Buskerud, Vestfold and Agder.
“The patients we see are often the ones who get severe headaches and high fever. Some may have paralysis with balance problems,” says Dr. Hilde Skurdal.
The National Institute of Public Health (Folkehelseinstituttet) will now take a closer look at the development and investigate whether this is a new trend or if the increase is only temporary.
