The Public Health Institute orders a more powerful flu vaccine

The coming influenza season will be combated with a stronger vaccine targeting the older part of the population.

Ordering the new type of vaccine is done because of the Coronavirus situation. It is more powerful, lasts longer and is meant for the elderly, writes Aftenposten.

“The new vaccine is an advantage for the elderly who often have a reduced effect of the ordinary vaccine that has been used for decades,” says Kjersti Rydland,senior adviser and pharmacist for the FHI told the newspaper.

Information about the new Fluad vaccine is currently being sent out to the country’s municipalities, who themselves must order it for their elderly in nursing homes and care homes.

Fluad is expected in Norway in November, a month before the flu season usually starts.

– “This vaccine is only approved for people over the age of 65, all others should take the regular seasonal flu vaccine when it arrives. We don’t know much about which strain of the flu will be dominant this year, but WHO is monitoring the situation, and there is little evidence that this year’s season will be particularly powerful,” Rydland says.
