Requirements for winter tyres for heavy vehicles are tightened, while violations of winter equipment requirements will be punished with higher fines, the government warns.

There will also be more checks during the winter, and the government has allocated NOK 20 million to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for this work, the Ministry of Transport and Communications says.

The new rules will come into force on November 15, 2020.

From next winter, only trailers using tyres with the “Alpine symbol” are allowed .

– These tyres have proven to have better acceleration capability in winter, according to the ministry.

According to the new rules, you will also receive a fine for each violation.

– As it has been up till now for example, you only got one fine even if you are missing five snow chains. Now you will get five, says Transport Minister Jon Georg Dale (FRP).

Germany and Sweden have introduced the same requirements, but with a transitional period until 2024.
