A 20% growth in the number of jobs in the catering and accommodation industry contributed to the number of new jobs increasing by 31,500 from May to June.

After four months of job losses, the number of jobs has now increased for the second month in a row. In the last two months, the number of jobs has increased by just over 45,000, according to figures from Statistics Norway (SSB). The number of employees increased by almost 21,000 from May to June this year, an increase of 0.8%.

Accommodation and catering activities account for most of the increase. From May to June, there were close to 15,000 new jobs in this sector, an increase of over 20%. However, the job market has not yet returned to the level before the pandemic – compared to June 2019, there are 24% fewer jobs in the industry.

Overall, there was an increase of 2.2% in the number of jobs in the second quarter compared with the same quarter the year before. In the same period, the average agreed monthly salary has increased to NOK 47,020 from the second quarter of 2020 to the second quarter of 2021.
