Sogn og Fjordane will be the first in the world to demand emission-free passenger express boats, and will have fossil-free operations from 2024. They currently pollute more than airplanes.

Diesel express boats account for huge emissions and pollute more than aircraft per person per kilometre, according to Bergens Tidende. Norway has long wanted to do something about this, and Sogn and Fjordane appear to be the first in the world with requirements for emission-free express boats when the new routes in the county go out for tender. April 30th 2022, today’s contracts for the operation of 18 routes expire, including express boats between Bergen and Sogn and Nordfjord, long routes which are now climate polluters, will become “green.”

The proposal for tenders has now been sent to the industry for consultation, to see if it is possible to deliver according to the requirements and before the operation will be started in 2024.
