A 34-year-old man in Gulating Court of Appeal has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for taking his two children to Pakistan and leaving them there.

The children, a girl and a boy, were born in Norway in 2012 and 2014. The accused 34-year-old took the children to the border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan in the summer of 2018, one year after he was divorced from the children’s mother, now a 25 years old woman.

The 34-year-old told his ex-wife that he wanted to take the children to Pakistan, including to visit his old and sick mother. Before leaving, he guaranteed to his mother that he would bring the children back to Norway, but he did not do so, writes Stavanger Aftenblad.

The 25-year-old mother has not seen or spoken to her children in two years.

The case was reported in August 2018. In October last year, the children’s father returned to Norway, but no with the children. He reported to the police and has since been in custody.

In February, he was sentenced to two years in prison in Stavanger District Court for evasion of care. He appealed the sentence, and the Court of Appeal sharpened the sentence by six months.

The children’s mother is also from the border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In court, she explained that she fears for her own life if she goes back there.

– The victim has further explained that she has been told by the family of the convicted ex-husband that the only way she can see her children again is by moving to Pakistan and resuming cohabitation and marriage with the convicted, the sentence says.
