The Norwegian government has decided to discontinue the regional measures implemented in municipalities in Oslo and Viken following the outbreak of the UK variant of the coronavirus.
The decision was made in consultation with the relevant municipalities.
“The situation in Oslo, Nordre Follo, Halden, and the neighboring municipalities has now been clarified to such an extent that the government has decided to discontinue the regional measures.
“Now it is up to the municipalities themselves to consider which measures they wish to implement in addition to the national recommendations and provisions,” Minister of Health and Care Services Bent Høie noted.
The Directorate of Health and the Institute of Public Health have been in dialogue with the municipalities concerned.
Discontinuation of national measures
Their recommendation is for the government to discontinue the government-initiated measures and allow the municipalities to introduce such local measures as the infection situation requires.
The regional measures apply until and including February 17. Fredrikstad and Hvaler municipalities have requested that the measures be extended until and including February 18 to give them time to consider their own measures.
“Over the coming days, the municipalities will decide on local measures. It is important that the population keeps up to date on the outcome of these considerations.
“The discontinuation of national measures does not necessarily mean that restrictions will be eased in your home municipality,” Høie said.
More about regional levels of measures
The Norwegian government can decide what measures to implement in a municipality and its neighboring municipalities when it is crucial to implement measures in a swift and coordinated effort to prevent the virus from spreading.
The level of measures chosen for the municipalities depends on how serious the outbreak is. There are four levels to choose from – you can find an overview of the measures that apply at the different levels here.
