The cities and surrounding areas will have strong population growth in the future. But many district municipalities will experience declining populations, according to Statistics Norway (SSB).

Overall, the population will grow by 11 percent by 2050, the regional projections’ main alternative according to Statistics Norway shows.

But population growth is very unevenly distributed geographically.

– “Viken is expected to grow by more than 18 percent, while Nordland is shrinking by 1.6 percent. Approximately 60 percent of all municipalities are expected to grow, and 20 percent have particularly high growth of more than 15 percent. 140 municipalities, on the other hand, are expected to have a decline in population,” says Statistics Norway researcher Sturla Løkken.
