Almost 300 seasonal workers who have been stuck in Norway since last year will be able to get a renewed residence permit for the 2021 season, the government states.
The corona pandemic has led many countries to impose strict entry restrictions. Along with almost a complete halt in airplane traffic, this has led to seasonal workers not returning home. In Norway, the issue has mainly affected seasonal workers from Vietnam.
It has been important to put in place a scheme that provides predictability for both employees and employers, Minister of Agriculture and Food Olaug Bollestad (KrF) noted.
“The industry has been concerned with getting this clarified so that seasonal workers who are stuck in Norway can have opportunities to work and earn money while they are in the country,” Bollestad added.
Exemption
There is a requirement for a six-month stay outside Norway for seasonal workers from countries outside the EU/EEA before they can obtain a new seasonal permit.
The seasonal workers who have been in Norway since 2020 have now been granted an exemption from this rule.
The exception only applies to seasonal workers who are stuck in Norway due to entry restrictions in their home country, as a result of COVID-19.
