The Norwegian government is introducing a ban on the purchase of machete from June 1.

“We now ban the purchase and possession of machete from June 1. This is a move in the fight against gang crime and violence and threats in the public sphere, and a clear signal to those who do not want to comply with law and justice,” Minister of Justice Monica Mæland (H) told the newspaper Nettavisen.

The new weapons regulations, which were adopted on Friday, enter into force on June 1, 2021. It includes a ban on acquiring knives with blade lengths of 25 cm, including machetes.

However, in order for current owners of such knives to have time to comply with the new regulations, the ban on possessing such knives applies from June 1, 2022.

“It is a signal to all those who are involved in crime and who think it is wise to get a machete,” the minister said.

She added that the ban is part of a larger package the government is launching against gangs.
