Billionaire and Amazon owner Jeff Bezos was launched into space on Tuesday with his own rocket, New Shepard. The journey was carried out without problems.

Just over ten minutes after the launch, the capsule with Bezos and his entourage parachuted themselves as planned and landed in a cloud of dust in the desert of western Texas.

“There’s a very happy bunch of people in this capsule,” Bezos said in his first comment.

With him was a “crew” of three, an 18-year-old boy from the Netherlands, an 82-year-old woman who is a NASA pioneer from Texas, and last but not least, his brother.

New Shepard set course through the atmosphere towards space on the anniversary of the lunar landing of Apollo 11 52 years ago.

The launch from Van Horn in Texas was to take place at 3 PM Norwegian time but was delayed for just over ten minutes.

Higher than Branson

Bezos’ space company Blue Origin’s launch vehicle was scheduled to reach a height of 106 kilometers, 16 kilometers further into space than Richard Branson managed to do on July 11.

Four of the minutes on the short spaceflight were to be spent outside the Karman line, which is considered the boundary between the atmosphere and space. Passengers could experience weightlessness for a few minutes.

The space capsule is fully automated, and there was no need for trained pilots on the trip up or down. Branson’s Virgin Galactic aircraft needed two pilots to land.

Bezos’ launch vehicle landed 3 kilometers from the launch site, while the capsule landed with a parachute.
