A new study shows that inmates in Norwegian prisons have more extensive mental disorders, somatic diseases, and age-related disorders than before.

The Center for Care Research East carried out the study on the need for care for inmates in Norwegian prisons in collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate of Health.

The findings emphasize that both the health and care services and the prisons report that some inmates have too significant mental and somatic problems to be in prison.

The report also indicates that the lack of presence of health and care services in prisons can lead to prisoners not receiving equal health services as the general population.

Challenges

Heidi Bottolfs, Director of Prevention and Security at the Norwegian Correctional Service, emphasized the importance of close collaboration with the health service.

“The study indicates a number of clear challenges in the work of providing better health and care services to our inmates. Further work must occur in close collaboration with the health sector so that we can arrive at better solutions than those we have today,” Bottolfs said.

The report will be followed up by the Norwegian Correctional Service and the Norwegian Directorate of Health in 2022.
