A piece of Banksy artwork, made in a basement in Bergen 22 years ago, will be sold at auction in London next week with an estimated value of NOK 30 million.
Will auction alongside art from Hirst, Hockey, and Basquiat
A piece of Banksy graffiti, made in a basement in Bergen 22 years ago, for a nightclub concept can be sold at auction in London next week. The piece, Laugh Now Monkeys with Monkey Placards was made for a nightclub concept and given to a man for free in Bergen. Banksy was then relatively unknown when he came to the city back in 2000.
The artwork will be auctioned off alongside other pieces from Damien Hirst, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat and could fetch an estimated price of NOK 30 million, the newspaper Bergens Tidende writes.
Artwork made in a basement for a concept night at a Bergen club
Banksy, who was invited to Bergen in 2000, created a series of 8 images for decoration for a concept at a local nightclub. They were designed and made by the then not-so-world-famous artist, in a basement in Bergen.
Olivia Thornton, from the auction house Phillips, spoke of excitement generated by this piece of artwork from early in Banksy’s career. Talking with Bergens Tidende, she said that the artwork is “a very significant, early graffiti-Banksy image. For us, it’s super exciting to have such an iconic Banksy from the start of his career.”
The spray paint on board piece of art will be up for auction at Phillips Auction House, in London, on March 3.
