The Ministry of Education and Research changed its advice from
earlier this year and now believes that Norwegian students can safely travel to the UK.
Due to the danger of the British leaving the EU without a Brexit agreement, the Ministry of Education and Research had warned Norwegian students not to seek an exchange in the UK. The fear was that the international exchange program Erasmus + could be affected.
‘’Now the danger is over’’ said Research and Higher Education minister, Iselin Nybø of Venstre (V) to Khrono.
“There was a long period of uncertainty about the situation for autumn exchange students, but we can now say that the Erasmus + program in the autumn will not be affected and that they can safely travel” said Nybø, pointing out that the EU Commission has proposed temporary rules that will ensure this.
In a message from the Ministry of Education and Research on May 1, it was stated that “it has been clarified that Norwegian students who have thought of the United Kingdom in the autumn of 2019 with Erasmus + can safely travel.”
The EU have implemented measures that allow anyone who has started an Erasmus + exchange to or from the UK to carry out the exchange stay on the same terms as before, the Ministry said.
Nybø said that there is extensive work in all ministries to prepare for a possible Brexit without agreement.
‘’I understand very well that the uncertainty the students have experienced is unfortunate, but these are challenges that we share with most other European countries. We are pleased that we have now been told that those students who have planned to travel to the UK in the autumn with Erasmus + do not have to worry’’ said Nybø.
