A former refugee consultant at the NAV has been convicted in Hålogaland Court of Appeal of abuse of position and making false rape accusations against a Syrian refugee.

The sentence is 14 months in prison, while the refugee is awarded NOK 100,000 in restitution, Rett24 writes.

The woman in her 50s worked in the NAV and assisted a refugee in applying for family reunification for his 12-year-old little brother. Sexual contact took place between the two in connection with the case.

The refugee in his 30s asked for a meeting with the consultant’s boss and explained that he felt pressured to have sex with the woman because he experienced that it could otherwise be difficult to get his brother to Norway. The woman responded by reporting the man for rape.

The Court of Appeal has concluded that the rape charge is false. Thus, the woman has been convicted of falsely reporting rape and abuse of position. The verdict reached the same conclusion that Salten District Court came to in February this year.
