Four people have ended up in hospital in Rogaland after their lungs were punctured during acupuncture. The Acupuncture Association calls for stricter regulations.
Stavanger University Hospital (SUS) has – so far this – year treated four patients with such injuries and has notified the County Governor in Rogaland about the cases, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reports.
“There were so many that we chose to report them,” section chief Beate Viddal at SUS stated.
Four different acupuncturists are responsible for the cases. Viddal believes this is due to a lack of knowledge.
The county authorities are now establishing a supervisory case.
Acupuncture Association: Better control needed
As there is currently no authorization or public approval scheme for acupuncturists, the Acupuncture Association is calling for better control of acupuncturists.
“We must ensure that those who insert needles are supervised and get a regulatory framework that allows them to be followed up in an adequate way,” Per Sloth Jensen of the Acupuncture Association noted.
