Never before have Norwegians demonstrated as much as in the last 12 months. A total of 8% of Norwegians participated in demonstrations in the last 12 months, Statistics Norway (SSB) figures show.

That is the highest figure ever recorded, according to SSB figures.

The SSB points to climate issues and the Black Lives Matter movement as possible causes for the increase in protesting.

The increase has been particularly large for young people between 16 and 24 years of age.

From 2011 to 2020, the proportion of those participating in demonstrations has increased from 11 to 17%.

Politically engaged

At the same time, the proportion of those who write political posts online has fallen from 20 to 12%. On the other hand, older people are getting more involved with political posts.

In 2011, only 1% of older people wrote more than 67 political posts online. The ratio rose to 9% in the last year.

Traditional political activity, such as promoting a cause for politicians and public officials, has also increased from 12% in 2017 to 17% in 2020.

Based on the findings, the SSB concluded that Norwegians are more politically involved than before.
