The wolf hunt in Hornmoen, Rømskog, Bograngen, and Slettås will be stopped, according to a ruling from the Oslo District Court.

“The state at the Ministry of Climate and the Environment is prohibited from implementing the December 22, 2021 decision on the killing of wolves in the Hornmoen, Slettås, and the wolves on the Norwegian side of the Bograngen and Rømskog territories, until otherwise determined by the court,” the ruling states.

The Ministry of Climate and the Environment must also pay legal costs of NOK 450,000 to the three animal welfare organizations Noah, WWF, and Foreningen Våre Rovdyr.

“Important signal”

In a joint press release, the animal organizations say that they are very relieved about the outcome and the ruling.

“The state should take this as an important signal that it should be more cautious when it comes to the management of endangered predators,” Noah leader Siri Martinsen stated.

WWF World Wide Fund for Nature believes that the ruling is a victory for the wolves, for biodiversity, and for nature safety.

“It is only right that wolf hunting is stopped until we get a legal clarification of whether the state is allowed to set the threshold for wolf hunting as low as it has in recent years,” Secretary-General Karoline Andaur in WWF World Wide Fund for Nature stated.

The state will appeal the ruling

The state disagrees with the ruling – which will thus be appealed.

“I do not agree with the district court’s conclusion… I have therefore decided to appeal the ruling to the Borgarting Court of Appeal.

“I hope the appeal case can be completed quickly so that we soon receive a final clarification,” Minister of Climate and Environment Espen Barth Eide (AP) noted in a press release.
