Police found about 80 dead sheep on a farm in Midt-Troms on Monday. The lambs have probably starved to death. Eleven other sheep had to be slaughtered.

The dead animals were discovered on Sunday by a veterinarian on behalf of the Food Safety Authority. Police launched an investigation on Tuesday, and it is not currently clear what has happened. But the animals may have been dead for some time.

“The animals have been dead for a while, but we cannot say for how long,” Troms Central Sheriff’s District Police Superintendent Geir Lofthus told NTB.

“The vet said the sheep have probably starved to death,” Lofthus added.

The farmer is being questioned by the police but so far has not been charged with the crime. The police have launched an investigation at the scene and will also question the neighbours.

“We will interrogate several people and try to identify what has happened,” says Lofthus.

“It’s rare that something like this happens to us, especially to a large extent,” he adds.

There are several other animals on the farm, and it is currently unknown what will happen to them in the future.
